Whether you want to admit it or not, we all have our bad days––sometimes more than we would like. There are ways to lift ourselves up and adopt a more positive attitude. Music has the mysterious power to make us feel better by reducing anxiety, improving our mood, and bringing different walks of life together.

Through standout lyrics, catchy music, and theatrical videos, today’s biggest female pop stars have generated a powerful mood that brings them––along with fans––from the depths of despair to shining hope. Here are three songs we’ve been listening to and strongly recommend you add to your next playlist:

1. Billie Eilish’s “Your Power”

There’s a reason why Billie Eilish has become one of the most discussed female artists today. The catchy music that goes along with her moody lyrics are so evocative and emotional. It’s hard not to feel something from Billie’s work. These same qualities can be found in one of her latest tracks: “Your Power.” Billie forgos the horror-inspired look of her debut album. Instead, she has a more natural appearance––empowering women to just be themselves.

“Your Power” takes the heavy topic of sexual abuse, and presents it in a healing and poetic manner. Everything––from the visuals, slow music, and Billie’s vocals––generate a powerful message of recovery and hope. From her music to her public appearances, Billie opens up about her own personal traumas and strives to inspire other women to do the same.

2. Dua Lipa’s “We’re Good”

Dua Lipa released her highly-anticipated record, Future Nostalgia, last year. The album was re-released on February 11th, 2020 as Future Nostalgia (Moonlight Edition). This edition contains the original tracklist, along with a few bonus songs. There are plenty of moments on this record that we love, but one that stands out is “We’re Good.”

The symbolic music video and fun beats bring the song’s subject matter to light: feeling trapped in a relationship and wanting to break free from it. From the appearance of lobsters, Noel-Nicolas Coypel’s The Abduction of Europa, and references to films––like Titanic––“We’re Good” delivers a complex and meaningful representation of a common, yet often unspoken, issue. By speaking out about her own experience, Dua encourages other women to be their authentic selves and enjoy life.

3. Katy Perry's “Electric”

The unexpected collaboration between two of the world’s most beloved icons––Katy Perry and Pikachu––brings a fun summer anthem called: “Electric.” The song is meant to celebrate Pokémon’s anniversary, but it also sends an uplifting message to women. The accompanying music video presents Katy and Pikachu following their younger selves in the past.

The heartfelt imagery, upbeat music, and both Katys’ interaction with her Pokémon bring an undeniable smile to our faces. Not only does the song encourage women to do something about their feelings of unfulfillment, but Katy’s words even suggest that one should keep working to find their own form of excitement in life. So take her advice and “electrify” your life (pun intended).
